Film distribution: the
life blood of the industry
So you think the film business
really just an 'old boys club', where the measure of success depends
more on who you know, than any market potential your filim
might actually have?
For many first-time filmmakers, the answer to that question is a
resounding yes.
Each year, I have the opportunity to meet hundreds of
newcomers to the markets, be it Cannes, AFM, or elswhere and I am
always amazed how so many people come looking for distribution for a
completed picture, but have no contacts, no agent, no distributor, no
publicist or PR, no plan -- Just the hope their film will
'get discovered', and that their film will get offers that will at
least cover the film production costs.
Under such conditions, the odds of such a deal happening are quite
frankly, slim to none.
Except for one gentleman I met, who produced an entirely watchable film
for $10,000. and was in Cannes getting offers. He wiill get his money
back easily.
There are many thousands of new films being released into the
marketplace each year, and the front runners have multiple festival
laurels, online core audience viral marketing, well connected sales
agents waxing poetic about them to deal makers, and many other
advantages which sway the buyers attention --that is the competition
for a new indy filmaker wanting to lock international deals.
Why I made this site
The purpose of this site is to provide some low-cost and even some
no-cost solutions for getting your film noticed at home and
internationally, and to
provide some simple tools that will give you back some measure
of control over your film's distribution life cycle.
My name is Dan Shannon
. Each year I attend many international markets, festivals and trade
shows centered on film, TV DVD and internet sales and distribution. By
all measures I am a small fish in a big pond, but I have
nonetheless, successfuly put in place
maketing, sales and distribution for hundreds of films, some
that have gone on to make very decent returns.
After 20 years as a producer, distributor, and 'internet marketing
evangelist', I have put this site together in response to a
real need for frank free information on
how to get a film to market. This is not the bible, and is far
from exhaustive, but it is something you can actually use, a roadmap.
